FAQ

What is gas in Fart Together?
Gas is the fart power the raft runs on. Steam tells players to manage direction, timing, and gas, and in Demo footage it appears as a bar at the top left of the screen next to a hippo head icon. The developer has not published numbers or rules for it.
What do the gas bar colors mean?
In Demo footage the bar is bright green when nearly full, lime and then yellow around the middle, orange when low, and a bare dark track when empty. That is our reading of creator footage, not an official legend.
What does a red rear mean in Fart Together?
Three creators mention a hippo whose rear turns red, and the context is running out of gas. AlesGames says the farts end once the rear is red, and OhSh4dow says he has run out after noting his rear is red. It is a creator-observed warning, not a documented rule.
How fast does gas refill?
In one stretch of OhSh4dow's Demo video where the on-screen timer ran without cuts, the bar went from empty to full in about six seconds. In another stretch the bar held only a small orange stub two seconds after being empty. The developer has published no refill rate, so treat six seconds as one example.
Do checkpoints refill gas?
Nothing we checked says so. Creators treat checkpoints as progress worth protecting, but no video or store page states that reaching one refills the bar, and the bar was seen refilling by itself.
Will gas change in Early Access?
It may. Early Access starts on 29 Oct 2026, and the developer says it will use Early Access to refine teamwork, physics, controls and difficulty. Re-check this page after launch.

What is gas in Fart Together?

Gas is the fart power the raft runs on: Steam tells co-op teams to manage “direction, timing, and gas”, and in Demo footage gas shows up as a bar at the top left of the screen. The word is the developer’s own. Nothing on the store page explains how the bar drains or refills, so this guide leans on what four creators’ Demo videos show on screen.

We have not played the game ourselves. Everything below comes from Steam’s text and from the videos listed under Sources, with each frame checked against the on-screen timer and counter. For the wider picture, read how to play Fart Together. For steering, see raft steering. For habits that save gas, see team tips.

Two hippos on a raft in a purple-spiked canal, a green cloud at left, and a nearly full bright green bar at top left

Frame from OhSh4dow’s video at 2:02. The bar is nearly full.

Where is the gas bar and what do its colors mean?

The gas bar sits at the top left beside a hippo head icon, and its color follows its fill: bright green when high, lime and yellow through the middle, orange when low, and a bare dark track when empty. In OhSh4dow’s run the bar passed through every one of these colors within about fifteen seconds of timer. Fill levels in the table are rough estimates by eye.

Fill (rough) Bar color Seen at (video time)
Nearly full Bright green 2:02 and 16:04
About two thirds Green 8:16 and 15:46
About half Lime, yellow-green 2:13 and 15:48
Two fifths or less Yellow 15:52 and 16:00
A quarter or less Orange 14:32 and 15:37
Empty Bare dark track, no color 15:42 and 15:58

Ripple rings behind a raft in a spiked canal while the top-left bar sits at roughly half full in lime green

Frame from OhSh4dow’s video at 2:13. The bar is about half full and lime.

A green cloud beside a small raft next to a red spiked float, with the top-left bar orange and about a quarter full

Frame from OhSh4dow’s video at 15:37. The bar is orange and about a quarter full.

Two hippos on a raft crossing a wide curved river with no cloud and only a small orange stub left in the top-left bar

Frame from OhSh4dow’s video at 14:32. Only a small orange stub is left.

What does a red rear mean?

A hippo with a red rear is out of gas or about to be: three creators mention it, and the frame where it is clearest also shows an almost empty bar. AlesGames notices his hippo’s rear turning red and says the farts have ended, and that a rear that gets too red leaves the team without farts (around 3:11). OhSh4dow says his rear is red at 0:30 and again around 14:06, 14:36 and 15:10, and at 15:40 says he has run out and needs to recharge. PatchyZoneYT’s clip has the same remark right after a partner releases a lot of gas (around 0:31). AlesGames’ and PatchyZoneYT’s captions are auto-translated, so treat the wording loosely.

A raft in a narrow spiked canal with a large green cloud below it and the top-left bar almost empty

Frame from OhSh4dow’s video at 6:27. The bar is almost empty and the dark hippo’s rear looks pink.

Because each creator talks about their own rear, gas looks to be tracked per hippo rather than as one shared pool. The overhead trailer view with a thin bar above each hippo, shown on how to play, points the same way. That is our inference. GamesMrkt has not said how gas is shared.

How fast does gas come back?

Fast, in the one stretch we could time: from an empty bar to a full one in about six seconds, with the death counter unchanged. OhSh4dow’s video has an on-screen timer, so elapsed game time can be read even where the video cuts. We read the bar every two seconds of footage in a stretch where the timer moved in step with the footage.

Timer Bar
282:13 Green, about three fifths
282:15 Yellow, about two fifths
282:17 Orange, about an eighth
282:19 Orange, under a tenth
282:21 Empty
282:23 Yellow, about two fifths
282:25 Green, about three fifths
282:27 Full, bright green

The drain before it took roughly eight seconds, from about three fifths at 282:13 to empty at 282:21. The death counter read 372 at the start of this stretch and still 372 at the end, so the refill was not a respawn reset.

Two limits matter. First, we cannot see button presses, so we do not know whether the player stopped pushing during the refill. Second, a different stretch looked slower: two seconds after the bar was empty (timer 31:42 to 31:44) it held only a small orange stub. Treat six seconds as one observed example, not a refill rate.

Do checkpoints refill gas?

Nothing we checked says they do. Creators treat checkpoints as progress worth protecting. OhSh4dow says “at least we made it to the checkpoint” around 2:34 and shows relief at one around 11:28, and AlesGames says a checkpoint “saved my life” around 6:22. Neither says it refills gas. Since the bar was also seen refilling by itself, a checkpoint refill would be hard to spot.

What do the top-right counter and the progress bar show?

The top-right number counts failed attempts, and the center timer adds up total play time, based on two creators’ screens matched against what they said out loud. GamesMrkt has not defined either one.

Footage What the screen showed What the creator said
AlesGames, around 9:40 Counter 35, timer 18:53 “35 deaths” (9:33 onward)
AlesGames, around 12:40 Counter 55, timer 29:57 “done this 55 times” (12:12 onward)
AlesGames, around 14:30 Counter 83, timer 42:36 “42 minutes and 83 deaths on the same map” (13:54 onward)
AlesGames, 15:28 n/a Finishes “on the 97th attempt”
OhSh4dow, around 6:26 Timer 31:38 “We’ve already been at it for 31 minutes” (6:12 onward)
OhSh4dow, 0:30 to 16:00 Counter rises 2, 39, 150, 238, 262, 372 Never states the counter, but it only goes up

The segmented bar across the top edge looks like a course progress track. In OhSh4dow’s footage a small green marker sits at the far left at 0:30 and has moved about four fifths of the way across by 16:00. Whether the tick marks are checkpoints is not shown.

What should a team do about gas?

Watch the bar, push in short bursts, and say out loud when you are low. Each point below comes from the footage, not from a developer guide.

  • Push in short bursts. AlesGames says “the key is to do small farts” (around 2:41) and “speed but with control” (around 4:14).
  • Call it when you run low. OhSh4dow tells his partner “I need to recharge” around 2:03 and again around 2:34, so the partner can take over or hold.
  • Expect orange to mean seconds. In the timed stretch above the bar went from about three fifths to empty in about eight seconds.
  • Let the raft coast. Creators say the raft keeps moving without input, which is covered in raft steering.

A raft with two hippos drifts around a wide canal bend with no cloud, and the top-left bar is green at about two thirds

Frame from OhSh4dow’s video at 8:16. No cloud, and the bar is green at about two thirds.

For group setup before you run, see how to invite friends and how many players. More habits are in team tips.

What is still unknown?

The developer has not published the numbers behind gas. These are still open:

  • The drain and refill rates, and whether pushing blocks the refill.
  • Whether gas is per hippo or shared (our inference is per hippo).
  • Whether a checkpoint, a respawn or a restart changes the bar.
  • Whether Early Access changes colors, rates or labels.
